90% of the 10 million dollar PR number mentioned at NamePros is certainly hype but they did get the number from someone as well as the domain name and a principle trademark on the word mark 1-800-COMPANY. And even if they didn’t pay 10 million dollars they are essentially valuing it at that internally. On the other hand the fact that it’s worth so much also means that you shouldn’t expect to come along and just register a number like that directly with the phone company either.

We work very hard to get backordered 800 numbers from Disconnect for you
If you think you might be able get a disconnected 800 number after it comes out on your own by just waiting, think again. We have several people and spend about thousands of dollars per month on access and programs and only get around 50% or so of the backorders because the competition is just tough, it’s HUGE.

Fake phone companies

You can dress up a Chihuahua and try to make it look like a real big company, but in the end, it’s still just a Chihuahua.
When most people think of a phone company, they think of a large call centers, trucks, and an army of people like the Verizon commercials. You don’t usually think of that as a home based business or something you could start for a few thousand dollars. That’s because you couldn’t start a real phone company for a few thousand dollars in hardware, some programming and a nice webpage, but you probably could start a fake phone company for that (or less).
Backorders Simplified in just 6 sentences

We’ve simplified the Backorder process down into just 6 sentences.
1. When a toll free number is disconnected in the national 800 database it goes into a 4 month disconnect holding period before it drops back into the available pool where other phone companies can get it.
2. Regular phone companies won’t show you disconnected numbers because they only look at what’s currently in the available pool and good numbers get taken within a second or two of coming out of the disconnect period so regular phone companies never see or show them.
3. We only allow the first person that requests a disconnected number from us to backorder it, and we’ll confirm the number then research it to get the exact date it comes out and if they don’t cancel it before that date, we’ll try to grab it for them in the first couple seconds.
4. A backorder does NOT guarantee that you’ll get the number, but if we do get it, it’s yours and we charge you $195 for an 866, $395 for an 877, $595 for an 888, and $795 for an 800, and we give you free temporary service and then help you transfer it to any other phone company you want for the ongoing service.
5. Just because an 800 number goes to a disconnected message, that does NOT prove it’s in disconnect status in the national database, and there’s no database with the owner info, except with the phone company responsible for that number.
6. We don’t track down the owner of an 800 number to get them to sign off on it (although we can process the paperwork for you if you do), but we do try hard to get numbers for you and even try to get some 800 numbers from the phone company for you right before they drop.

We get a lot of callers starting out like this, usually followed by an explanation that the number went to some type of disconnect or error message. And when you try to explain things, they tend to want to answer you back with sentences that start with “But…” alot too. In some ways that’s kind of like thinking you can or should be able to buy a house just because there’s nobody home. They could be home but just work nights or it might be active but just from Canada or some other state where it’s used by a tow truck company that doesn’t want calls from outside his state.
There are a lot of different reasons why a number might be going to a message that sounds like it’s disconnected without the toll free number actually being in disconnect status. It could be pointing to a local number that’s disconnected. It could just be set up wrong in several different ways in the carrier. It could be working at the carrier but just not programmed in the switch properly. It could be active with the carrier but they might show it going to a reseller who doesn’t have any record of it. It could be a pager number that’s not in service. It could be a call in number for American Idol that they only turn on during the show hours.
Calling an 800 number doesn't prove very much but you can dig deeper if you really want to.
A One Time Extension of the temporary 800 service

We give you free temporary service for the first 30 days or 100 minutes of use. That gives you time to transfer the number to whatever phone company you want to use it with for the ongoing service. But what happens if you forget to transfer your 800 number? The temporary service expires, but it’s still your number. You can still transfer it to whatever company you want even after the temporary service has expired. You can also get a one time extension if you need it.

People always ask, Why we find so much better numbers than anyone else? And why when they go to their phone company, they are told the numbers we showed on our website weren’t available? They often think there’s something devious going on, but there really isn’t. We just do a better job at that, because that’s our job and that’s really NOT their job. It’s just something they need to do in order to do their job.
There are four different types of toll free numbers that we find better than any other phone company for four different reasons. But if I had to sum it all up I would sum it up with three words. We try harder. That may be an over simplification but isn’t that really the main reason why most people succeed?
